spindizzy: Relax we've got two or three hours before the rioting starts (Rioting)
I caught up with where I got to the first time I played Dragon Quest Builders 2! Spoilers for the post-Moonbrooke return to the island, obviously.

Is this how normal people feel about faceless, voiceless protagonists and their relationships in other games? I don't think I have enough emotional energy to be this invested in multiple characters whose personality we get exclusively through other people!

Anyway, my plan for this weekend is to just steamroll through the plot, and get the pain over with, and then if the game lets me keep building I can go and do my ridiculous projects then. Wish me luck!

I've finished Khrumbul-Dun in all of its Carry On Mining glory, and now I'm back to FUCKING MOONBROOKE. Spoilers to the end of Moonbrooke behind the cut!

spindizzy: Mermista groaning (*groan*)
I made the very foolish mistake of starting a new game of Dragon Quest Builders 2. I was gonna just play the tutorial and then switch back to my main save file, and then I remembered how much I enjoyed running around as a tiny gormless little moppet and how Malroth is BEST BOY, so uh. Here I am, back in Furrowfield, building a farm again.

It turns out that DQB2 is INCREDIBLY easy to sequence break. My immediate reaction on being given an incrementally filled map is to run around like my hair's on fire to get at least the broad strokes in! And if you do that, MOST of the quest progression NPCs won't speak to you, but you can collect the plot-critical items, which leads to things like being told to go and learn how to plant tomatoes while standing in a tomato field. It's involved some awkward teleporting across the map to have conversations and unlock recipes as well, but it's been a good laugh.

I will say though, this playthrough is going a LOT faster. Some of this is just plain knowing what I'm doing and not NEEDING to go "What happens if I dig a hole straight down until the game won't let me any more," or "Can I tunnel through an entire mountain and into the sea before the Stop Dicking About merman shows up to eat me?" anymore! But I'm building my towns a little more efficiently, and without the high-key fortifications that I built in my first go-round, just because I know roughly what I need to squeeze into the town. And I'm... Not talking to my villagers as much as I did in my previous playthrough. And it's a shame, because I enjoy most of the bumbling disaster moppets my character lives with! But also I really want to speed through Furrowfield so I can unlock the trowel and make things look a little more even. >_>

I JUST WANT TO TRAVEL THE WORLD AND REPAIR ALL OF THESE ABANDONED STRUCTURES, OKAY. There's lots of abandoned houses and derelict barns and damaged bridges scattered across the island! And I don't need to fix them all up and restore them to their former glory, but I absolutely need to fix them all up and restore them to their former glory. So I guess depending on how I feel after FUCKING MOONBROOKE, that's my post-plot project?

... Yes I know the point of a sandbox game like this is to go wild and build whatever you want, but I just! Really like working from the roots that were left behind! I think my ideal game would be Heaven's Vault but you're reconstructing ancient buildings in space. I have no idea how a game like that would work but I do kinda want it.

Child of update: I'm glad that my character is apparently the bi icon of this world, where all of the women are like "I want to team up with you and fight monsters, and also admire how dashing and beautiful you are!" and all of the men are like "... Shit, guess we can't compete with that."

The situation in Dragon Quest Builders 2 has been upgraded to me telling every NPC on this island GET TO FUCK YOU SHITEY CUNTS.

I was genuinely not expecting to get sucked into Dragon Quest Builders 2, but HERE I AM. Apparently, "here is a nice island, build some stuff on it, here's some suggestions of what you could make!" is about the right level of emotional investment for me right now, which I probably should have guessed from all of my friends being ambushed by Animal Crossing at the same time.

... In news shocking to everyone, the demo is like... The entire first quarter of the game. Which makes sense, because building games are better when you've got more time to get invested in what you're doing, but also: holy crap this is a lot of game to be given for free. I guess points to whoever made that decision for it working?

But yes, it's great, I have a very minimal emotional investment and a bunch of mindless tasks to be getting on with, A+, fantastic work everyone.

(Spoilers through to the third plot island – Moonbrooke?)
