So let me tell you a story about a website called del.icio.us that existed in the long long ago.

I don't know if anyone wants a recap of fannish social bookmarking, but this is pretty solid! And it's made me think about why I stopped using pinboard as much as I used to – and it's because I've switched to mainly reading fic/looking at fanart on my phone. If I like something, it goes into my twitter bookmarks (impossible to navigate), or I save an epub of it! Which is great because I can read fic WHENEVER I WANT! But also bad, because it means that if I lose my phone I'm gonna have to comb through AO3 to recreate my collection. Hm.

Part of me is going "OVERHAUL YOUR TAG SYSTEM, MAKE IT A USEFUL AND TERRIFYING THING TO BEHOLD!" and I could! Very easily! But the idea of committing to anything more complicated than staring blankly into space is a joke, so uhhhhh maybe I will just start small. Clear out a bit of my twitter bookmarks, maybe. Tag some of the crafting sites I keep staring into. The fun of pinboard is having that historical record showing the stratas of your interests over time, right? So maybe it's time to start building that up again.

[personal profile] superborb posted: "Interesting people to subscribe to" meme!

I remember that when DW migrations were discussed on twitter, one of the common refrains was not knowing where to start. I feel like friending memes are kind of high pressure because of the expectation of reciprocity if you're totally new! Also, you have to BE THERE when the meme is still active. So I was thinking instead about:

✧・゚: *✧・゚:* INTERESTING PEOPLE TO SUBSCRIBE TO *:・゚✧*:・゚✧

Saw this and thought it might be relevant to people's interests! I know a bunch of incredibly cool and talented humans on Dreamwidth, clearly this is my chance to TELL THE WORLD.

HELLO FRIENDS????? Remember those fandoms we all used to be in? and producing things for? Well, baby, it's time for a nostalgia run, so buckle up your chocobos and get ready to roll. We haven't done a Kiss Battle in years and [personal profile] lassarina and I for one think it's TIME TO DO SO.

OKAY I WAS THINKING LAST WEEK THAT I REALLY MISSED THE KISS BATTLE AND APPARENTLY SEV AND/OR LASSARINA ARE PSYCHIC, omg, omg, omg.

By which I mean "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the comments on this post wailing that I've forgotten everything I ever knew about shipfic."

Today in capslock about fic: I'm still on my Scum Villain bullshit!

In unrelated news: I've been scoping out the fic for Kingdom (the netflix one), and I feel very unfair in side-eying Crown Prince/Yeong-sin being the most popular ship, but CONSIDER THIS: MY TWO OT3S OF CROWN PRINCE/YEONG-SIN/SEO-BI OR YEONG-SIN/SEO-BI/CRUSHING UNSPOKEN GUILT. Like, I appreciate that my side-eye is probably baseless! It seems to be with Castlevania, where my OT3 is the most popular ship! AND YET.
spindizzy: Gatomon raising her paw (I have a question)
Right, [twitter.com profile] forestofglory suggested I capslock about some of the fic I've been reading, and I'm not gonna lie to you: I've been stuck in a hole of Scum Villain's Self-Saving System fic since the summer! I'm still in the stage where I'm just trying a bit of everything to see what I like, which is honestly baffling, because I can't understand why I haven't run out of fic yet. Is this what it's like to be in a large and active fandom?!

(Q: Susan, you know there are bigger fandoms on AO3, right?
A: Listen, I live in "six people and a shoelace" fandoms, the fact that there's something updating every day is MINDBLOWING.)

A thing that I've been learning through this dive is that reading WIPs is honestly less stressful than waiting until a fic is finished before I read it. If I start reading it while it's a WIP, then I can't be intimidated by its eventual word count! I mean, it helps that I basically expect every WIP to go completely unfinished, but, *hand-waves aggressively* Plus, I was surprised when I realised how many modern AUs I was reading, because honestly they're not something that I ever seek out? I don't DISlike modern AUs, it just never occurs to me to look for them.

And a thing that I'm learning about writing about fic is that talking about what fic I'm reading and enjoying feels a lot more revealing about my id than reviewing books. Unsurprising, considering how many fic are drilling down to one specific thing that the writer's thinking about, but still rude!

So, uh, here's a whistle-stop tour of my id this week, I guess???????

What you should all take from this list is that I want the grumpy one to be soft for the confused one, ridiculous shoujo manga tropes, and people to be incredibly bad at using their words.

GUESS WHICH DUMBASS REALISED THAT SHE'S NOT LOOKED AT HER DIARY ALL WEEK BECAUSE SHE 100% KNOWS WHAT SHE'S GOT GOING ON. I did not, that was 100% the ADHD demon whispering to me and I should not have listened.
  • Today has been a day of discovering incredibly soothing activities!

    • [twitter.com profile] butnotdegeneres recommended Picross Luna, which is a pastel witchy looking nonogram thing that has eaten hours of my day.

    • I installed the kudosed/seen/unseen script for AO3 and it turns out that going through a fandom tag and clicking "skip" on anything in a language that I can't read or that's a crossover into something I don't care about is INCREDIBLY PEACEFUL. 10/10, would recommend, at least if you're like me and you only truck with small-ish fandoms. ... I just find clearly defined end points soothing! Being able to tick things off makes me happy!

    • Twitter rolled out the scheduled posts thing for non-business accounts and I didn't notice! So now I can queue a shit-ton of links to cute soothing art and not a power in the verse can stop me.

  • Scum Villain's Self-Saving System has latched onto me, I was right right. ... Or I latched onto it, I guess, because my brain goes "Oooh, id fic that hits all of the delicious tropes? Yes, you may have happy chemicals for this." I am strongly considering reading the other (more sweary) translation, just to see if I can match up which bits of the fandom read which translation.

  • It's been disgustingly warm this week, even for me.

  • A group of us got together and had a socially-distanced picnic, and it was really nice! The anxiety was high, but my theory was "All involved parties have been as locked down as possible, and there's no way for any of us to isolate due to the house layout, so if one of us goes we might as well all go." We got to see our friends and gently roast each other and laugh at each other's quarantine haircuts! I nearly ate a wasp sandwich while looking for the wasp that had been harrassing Lex! I continue to be confused by the neurotypicals, because when I'm at home not interacting with people, I'm like "Yes, this is how life has always been," and when I'm sitting in a park with my friends I'm like "Yes, this is how life has always been," and basically what I'm saying is that I love my friends but also forget that I've not seen them in a while once I actually see them.

  • Monday marked... Twelve years since my dad died? I think? 2008-2020, what is maths. Didn't drink to him this year, but that's because treating my mental health issues, which I feel is a better tribute considering he didn't or couldn't.

  • I accidentally fell into a pit of fandom nostalgia this week and god I miss fandom newsletters. Like [livejournal.com profile] ff_press was GREAT and I loved it. It wouldn't work now, because fandoms are spread too far across the internet, but weirdly having a feed reader bring me AO3 updates for my fandom makes me feel more involved? I dunno, feelings are weird, nostalgia is weirder, I don't have object permanence and my memory's awful so nostalgia as a CONCEPT is fucking weird.

  • I really need to figure out a better solution for my keyboard and stuff. When I have access to my desk, it works great! Got my laptop on top of a box so there's space for me to use the desk as well, and it's probably better for me through ergonomics or something. But I don't have access to my desk 9-5, when I'm trying to do things, so... Not perfect yet. I'll think of something.
spindizzy: Mermista facepalming. (*facepalms harder*)
... I squinted at my fandom lists and realised that maybe three-quarters of my ride-or-die ships involve one or more of the participants being temporarily dead, actually dead, never real in the first place, stuck in a metaphorical box for anywhere between a year and a couple of centuries, a casualty of a time-loop and/or shunt to an alternative timeline, or otherwise just stuffed far away from the reach of the people that love them.

And my favourite fiction tropes are "Mutual pining" and "Slow burn".

Why do I cause myself this pain?!
spindizzy: Konzen and Goku clinging too each other. (The final curtain falling)

[community profile] fandomcalendar posted: Multifandom: March Meta Matters Challenge

While creators have often used multiple sites to host their works, one type of work has generally been left out of fans' efforts at archiving and preserving fanworks -- meta. In many cases, meta posts have not been copied anywhere else other than the location where they were first posted, leaving them particularly vulnerable to loss.

I know I have a bunch of people who also read/write/care A LOT about meta, so friends! This might be a challenge for you!
