[Ficbit] No Firearms, No Service
Tuesday, 1 September 2015 12:12 amI've noticed a recurring problem that I have in my writing show up here, and I'm torn as to whether I should talk about it and ask for suggestions, because if I tell people what it is then suddenly they will see it whether they'd noticed it or not. On the other hand, if I don't tell them, people might think I'm not aware of this flaw. SUFFICE IT TO SAY, it has been a while since I wrote an actual conversation in a fic, so I'm rusty as fuck and will need the help.
... Plus I've never written anything for this fandom before, so, uh, GUYS. HELP.
(Plus, I'm discovering that while I want to write sprawling epic stories, I have absolutely no idea how to make that work. I'm much better at picking a word count and doing my best to describe a moment in that space, so I don't always have the skills I need to do basic descriptions and scene setting. ... I think I might have found my task for Inkstorm!)
Uncharted // No Firearms, No Service
G | 200 words | Nate/Elena | No spoilers because I STILL haven't finished the first bloody game, I just... Ship it. >_> | They are definitely going to have a quiet day at the library. Definitely.
"You're taking guns to the library?" Elena asked. Nate looked at her, eyebrows climbing, but she was already waving a hand at him. Hadn't even looked up from the camera equipment she'd spread out across the bed. "What am I talking about, it's you, of course you are."
Nate made sure the holster was hidden under his jacket, then climbed onto the pillows behind her because it was the only clear space. Elena actually put the camera down and leaned back so he could kiss her. "Hey, I'm just being paranoid. We're gonna have a quiet day doing research, right? It's not like anyone's gonna start a firefight in a library."
"Sure," Elena said, a wealth of scepticism in her voice. "I've been in libraries with you, Mister Drake, and I'm pretty sure we got shot at."
Nate laughed, one hand smoothing up and down her stomach. "You're worried about me? You're the one going to breakfast with Sully, you're probably in more danger than I am."
Elena hummed smugly and started reassembling her gear. "Two hours. You'll be calling us in two hours to say someone new is trying to kill you."
(It was an hour and a half.)

Date: 2015-09-02 04:28 pm (UTC)I love the entire first paragraph, it is the essence of them.
Nate made sure the holster was hidden under his jacket, then climbed onto the pillows behind her because it was the only clear space.
That's right, Nate. The camera equipment will always come first.
and UGH Nate being adorable and touchy and climbing on things and wanting attention.
Also, I so love the idea of them going to the library and spending a day researching together. I really want to read that, now. Nate actually being quiet and focused on the books until he finds something and gets excited and loud and tears a page out of a book and angry librarians attack him.
"Sure," Elena said, a wealth of scepticism in her voice. "I've been in libraries with you, Mister Drake, and I'm pretty sure we got shot at."
I can hear this SO PERFECTLY in Elena's voice. I don't understand how you have their characterization so good when you haven't even finished the game.
Elena hummed smugly and started reassembling her gear. "Two hours. You'll be calling us in two hours to say someone new is trying to kill you."
SO GOOD. AND THEN THE LAST LINE. I loved this and I really, really want to read more Uncharted fic by you.
Also, I have no idea what you're talking about either re: your writing.
I want to write sprawling epic stories, I have absolutely no idea how to make that work.
I have this problem too. And even when I have ideas for action scenes!!!!!! I just end up writing a lot of conversations. And porn.
