spindizzy: (Be happy!)

Hey everyone! I'm back from Nine Worlds, that post is incoming but it's at 3000 words and isn't even HALF done, but I wanted to do a quick update! I am tentatively calling today a good day!

  • I am POSSIBLY getting a payrise! At the very least I'm being moved up a band at work (!!!), and because I wasn't at the bottom of the band I was in (!!!!) that might carry over? If it does, the rough back-of-an-envelope maths we did in the pub sujects I might be getting like £10.14 an hour, which is amazing.

  • The email about Tempest and Slaughter (Tamora Pierce's latest) being on Netgalley came through, and I got approved for it! I have a copy of Tempest and Slaughter! That I can read! And yell about baby!Susan's Numair feels because they were mighty!

  • I did a quick check to see if I can get the Immortals Quartet in ebook form, and the answer is not yet. They come out on the 18th of October, which is just over a week after my birthday!

  • And I only had like ten customers to speak to today, which is amazing for a Thursday, we're usually rushed off our feet Thursdays.

  • We went to see The Meg after work and I enjoyed it so much! A lot of the cast I was like "Oh hey, it's you! I recognise you!" and it was funny and silly and it was honestly better than I was expecting? It's not "Grr angry Jason Statham knows better than everyone else and kicks over the work of a team to choke out a shark!" It's "Jason Statham is a sweet guy with issues, who joins a team of also sweet people with issues, and at least the first half of the movie is just nice people trying to work together despite having the worst day." I love Lori, who is a submarine pilot and Jason Statham's character's ex; I love even more that the film is explicit that they are not getting back together ever. And it had Ruby Rose, which is great because ALL action movies are improved with the addition of Ruby Rose! And things that in other films might be big huge turning points like "Huh, you were actually telling the truth about the monster in your backstory and I was a massive douche to you for years about it!" is... Actually dealt with in a conversation? THIS IS SO REFRESHING. Plus, Li Bingbing! Yay! Being smart and competent and joking around with Jason Statham!

... I really liked that the first half of the movie doesn't do the "monster picks off the people you like one by one." That is a really cool development and I am here for it, more of that please. Also more of the "here is the blatant and acknowledged love interests" ("This is the worst moment of my life," says Jason Statham as his ex-wife and future stepdaughter attempt to team up to fix his love life) "but we're not going to make them kiss. They're just going to respect each other and make jokes together and save the world from a megalodon together, okay?" THIS IS MY JAM. THIS IS THE MOST MY JAM, OKAY, I AM HERE FOR IT. MORE MOVIES WHERE WE GET THE RELATIONSHIP BUILDING AND TEAMWORK AND NO KISSING, I WANT THAT.

It was just... It was a lot of fun! It was exactly what I wanted, and a lot better than I expected.

  • And then I got to come home, watch Great British Menu with Mike while Lex deckbuilt, and now I'm chilling out with fanfic and Guardian and unravelling this fancy ball of wool I ruined! This is... A good day?! I'm trying to remind myself that I don't need to wait for the other shoe to drop, but either way... This was good. I'm very happy. Thank you everyone for being with me today on a day that made me happy.

That sounds like a day good enough to spread happy light over the next week.

(I'm looking forward to your 9W post, but no pressure.)
