I'm bougie enough to join a ~makerspace~ now
Wednesday, 30 November 2022 02:54 pmDid I ever write down the stuff I meant to ramble at you all about before I got distracted by twitter being on fire? Absolutely not. So now you're all getting whatever I think is relevant!
What I think is relevant today: I learned a thing! I joined Nottingham's Hackspace in... I think September? I couldn't figure out how people learned whether they liked machine embroidery without investing in a MINIMUM £500 machine (second-hand),
suncani1 mentioned makerspaces, I went "Nottingham is not cool enough to have one of – wait, what do you mean there's one in Sneinton."
(I am SO MAD that I feel comfortable in Sneinton. For one thing the public transport's terrible, and for another it's called Sneinton.)
So yeah, I joined because I want to learn how to use an embroidery machine and so far I've not actually been able to do that. You need an induction! The inductions are run by volunteers! So I have to wait! And while I'm waiting I figured I might as well learn how to use a 3D printer, because that's totally also a reasonable thing to do. I've been shown how to use a regular 3D printer (an Ender 3?) and a resin printer, I just need time to get in and actually practice. I've picked out a few projects that would actually be useful, and a few that are just cute, so I'm a little excited! I just need to make time to schlep all the way to bloody Sneinton to do it. And now I think about it, it's probably too far to take all of my patterns that need tracing and cutting out, but they DO have a cutting table that would hold A0 patterns with room to spare if I do. And they have workbenches that I could probably use for finishing off my dressform if I could get her there. Hm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
... One of my coworkers said I was very brave because I'm forever trying out new crafts. I couldn't think of a kind way to say "It's literally just the ADHD making me collect crafting skills like an MMO character, but thank you!" so I didn't argue.
Anyway, please enjoy the hackspace's extremely cursed child. They're set up with a pulley system behind the front door so they talk to you when you walk inside. They also have a friend somewhere in the same room that talks back. This is fine.
