Oh no, this is a flashback episode and it looks SUPER CUTE.
(Master Post)
- People who can crack eggs on a countertop and only get egg where they mean to are Too Powerful and must be stopped.
- I like this kind of opening, it's just so peaceful and domestic.
- Also Taiga waiting for him before they both run out to rescue the laundry is sweet. She acts like a kid!
- The slow-motion rain is effective too!
- "Don't throw them!" says that tiny mountain of laundry that is now Shirou.
- Loooook at tiny Shirou and Taiga, they're so precious! And I keep forgetting that Taiga is only actually a few years older than Shirou, bless her.
- Oh god, Taiga hasn't changed at all. But also she looks like she's spinning around to dry that shirt and that's really cute.
- Shirou learning to cook by watching cooking shows and taking notes, omg I die.
- Shirou is and always has been the responsible adult in his house, and that's very sad because he's like... Ten.
- I love his relationship with Taiga. Especially because he used to be a tiny grump who looked after her, and now he is chill and they look after each other.
- "This is more difficult than anything you've made before." Oh he's so small and trying his best for his family! ;___;
- Taiga reading out the instructions is making the instruction part of this episode textual, and that is honestly really interesting to me on a storytelling level.
- HIS HANDS ARE SO TINY ON THE COOKING UTENSILS, OH NO.
- It's kinda nice the way Taiga and Shirou are trading off on who's reading off the instructions, because it makes it feel more like they're working together? And Taiga stepping in to help with the bits that she CAN do is really nice.
- LOOK AT THE TINY BURGER IN THE MIDDLE! As a baker, I am very familiar with the "Okay, here's a mini one to use up all of the dough" technique.
- KIRITSUGU, oh no!
- The juices in the frying pan look distressingly realistic.
- Look at them staring intently into the frying pan, awww.
- (I hope drawing the squiggles for the burgers was fun, because it kinda looks like it was either fun or stressful, with very little middle-ground.)
- I like how you can tell that's he's still learning how to cook just from what's on the plate, rather than how he made it.
- Bless him, Shirou's response to being complicated is "Yeah, never mind that."
- It's really weird to picture Kiritsugu living in a normal house and being like a normal person, so this is gonna be a trip.
- Kiritsugu: Did you two make these?
Taiga, proudly: No, it was all Shirou! I helped out just a tiny bit! - HE SPECIFICALLY MADE HAMBURGERS BECAUSE HE KNOWS THAT KIRITSUGU LIKES THEM, OH MY HEART.
- Shirou not eating until he sees Kiritsugu's reaction!
- He looks so happy and proud, help, I'm dying.
- HE WANTS TO MAKE FOOD AS GOOD AS THE FOOD KIRITSUGU'S EATING IN OTHER COUNTRIES, OH MY POOR ABANDONED BABY CHILD.
- Kiritsugu stop encouraging this, you are a terrible parental figure.
- "I'd hate to miss out on Shirou's cooking if I did have to leave."
"Well, just stay here forever. And I'll get even better." - BLESS THIS CHILD, OH NO.
- *LIES ON THE FLOOR AT SHIROU PLAYING AROUND LIKE A KID DESPITE HIS TRAGIC BACKSTORY AND ALSO LEARNING HOW TO COOK SO THAT KIRITSUGU WOULDN'T LEAVE HIM ALONE AGAIN*
- (Like, I don't know how much of Shirou's backstory is actually canon in this universe, especially considering the subs are translating his relationship with Kiritsugu as "grandfather" instead of "father" like the main series does, but oh this precious baby.)
- AND TAIGA IS THERE FOR ALL OF THE SIGNIFICANT MOMENTS OF HIS LIFE, I AM VERKLEMPT
- "I can't wait to see your progress." *GROSS CRYING INTENSIFIES*
- Everything fading to watercolours, and then pencil lines, awwwww. ;____;
- Man, food in this show has so many associations and memories and family attached, which I know should be obvious from the name, but it's nice to see it in action?
- Stealth Ilya!
- DOES HE KNOW WHO ILYA IS THOUGH. LIKE. WHO HER FAMILY IS.
- Shirou desperately trying not to drop a raw burger on Ilya's head makes me smile.
- Awwww, his entire family is over to eat the meal he first learned to cook FOR HIS FAMILY, *sobs*
- Taiga getting called out by a child, omg.
- LOOK I JUST HAVE SO MANY EMOTIONS ABOUT SHIROU HAVING A FAMILY THAT LOVES HIM AND THAT HE CAN COOK FOR, OKAY.
- Watching the end credits, I have two things to say: Bless Assassin for only being able to be in line-ups in cardboard cut-out form because he's stuck outside a temple, and also WHY IS ARCHER NOT IN THIS YET, I WANT THERE TO BE COOKING DRAMA AND HIM ALREADY KNOWING HOW TO MAKE ALL OF RIN'S FAVOURITE FOODS, AND JUST! I WANT THAT SWEET DRAMA!
- Recipe for hamburgers: First, take half of the finely chopped onions, and saute them on low heat. When they're fully coated with oil, add a dash of salt. And once they're caramelised, cool them off. And leave the rest of the onions raw. Place the chilled ground beef and a dash of salt in a bowl. Mix it well until it's slightly sticky, as quickly as possible. When you've mixed the meat thoroughly, add bread crumbs, egg, nutmeg, pepper, and the onions you sautéed earlier and mix them in. Drop the meat from one hand to another to remove the air, and shape them into patties around 1.5cm thick. When you've shaped them to your liking, leave them in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or so. Warm up the frying pan and grill them on medium heat. Once a crust forms, grill them for three minutes on low heat. When the sides turn white, flip them over and grill them some more. Turn off the heat, cover them and leave them for two or three minutes. Turn on the heat again and grill for two minutes or so. Poke the patties with a bamboo skewer. If you see translucent juice, it's a sign that it's done. Lastly, cook on high heat for fifteen seconds or so until the patties are browned.
