I'm not sure that this is where I want it to be yet, but I'm not sure how to fix it. May revisit this idea another day, see if I can make it better.

Homura knows that some things are constant across timelines. Sayaka is the one who becomes a Witch first. If Mami finds out the truth, she always kills Kyoko first.

Homura doesn't spend a lot of time wondering why. Perhaps Mami expects Kyoko to be the one best able to fight back - most experienced, most willing to fight another magical girl. Or perhaps, if the death of two magical girls so close together drives one of them over the edge, Kyoko's Witch is the one that she doesn't want to see.

Homura doesn't tell Mami that she has underestimated Madoka. Homura doesn't tell Mami about the fate awaiting them. Homura doesn't let her fight Sayaka's Witch if she can avoid it. Homura doesn't want to face Walpurgisnacht alone, but she will if that's what it takes to protect Madoka.

She knows Mami has already died for them so many times.
