Gilbert's devotion was revolting. He had martyred everything on the altar of Oz Vessalius. The regard of the Vessalius family, his family, his innocence, his access to Raven, his sanity itself; he'd sacrificed it all without question. If Oz had asked for his eye, then Gilbert would probably have torn it out with his own hands.
If the whole affair hadn't been so pitiful, he might have hated both of them for reminding him of himself. It was so pathetic, though, that he almost needed to interfere; it was that, or just sit and laugh and wait for the fall.
