HOW AM I DOING THIS MUCH TRAVELLING OH MY GOD

HI DREAMWIDTH! I continue to exist, and I'm back to being mildly frazzled at every turn.

  • I went to visit [twitter.com profile] jilliferium last week! Apart from cursed travel, it was fun!
    • Cursed travel:
      1. The tramlines are being replaced, which means rail replacement bus services.

      2. Some absolute WHEEL OF CHEESE built a dam out of clay, which was then covered with concrete, and we are all very shocked to discover that this is not structurally sound! Which means that all train routes past Sheffield were cut off.

      3. The exhaust on Lex's car started falling off, and the fan belt on Jill's housemate's car started fraying.

      4. Something went wrong at London Euston on Thursday (I think some overhead lines snapped), which meant Crewe was chaos. Like "There is one carriage running to Derby and a hundred people to go on it" levels of chaos.

    • Jill and I finally played Overcooked together! Contrary to all expectations, we didn't actually end up swearing and murdering each other? We actually got pretty high scores? WHAT IS GOING ON HERE, THIS WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED.

    • And we played Forbidden Island, which we ROCKED at for most of the game. She was the diver and I was the helicopter pilot, we fear no sinking! Except that on the VERY LAST TURN the tile we needed to win the game sank beneath us so we lost! *shakes fist at board game*

    • We also watched a bunch of Let's Plays and comedy shows, none of which are my usual but they were thoroughly entertaining! It turns out that watching people collapse into despair over Super Mario Maker 2 is fun? And the Five Nights at Freddy's fandom is BATSHIT, which I say as someone who has SEEN SOME FANDOM NONSENSE. And we watched three of the Iliza Shlesinger Netflix specials (Elder Millennial, Confirmed Kills, and Freezing Hot), and while I don't always agree with her – take your gender essentialism and go – I did laugh so hard that I cried at bits of it, so it works! ... Also we split a tub of Ben and Jerry's during Freezing Hot, which made Jill fall asleep, and if you've never tried to watch a comedy show without waking someone up, I DO NOT RECOMMEND IT.

    • Jill and I are two queer penguins, right, so I can't explain to you how many times we yelled "ARE THE STRAIGHTS OKAY?!" at the TV. (The straights are not okay.)

    • We also watched She-Ra S3 with her housemates, and. Y'know. It was fine. I am a ruined vessel of sorrow and regret, but it's fine.

    • Okay, but one of Jill's friends is a vicar, right, and I am never going to get tired of Jehovah's Witnesses deciding that A LITERAL ACTUAL VICAR is the challenge that they want to step to. I will also never get tired of them accidentally getting Jill instead, who has two degrees in theology, an encyclopaedic knowledge of the bible, and no patience for people who think that earthly suffering is less important than heavenly rewards. You can see how this might go poorly.

    • Jill's housemates have a tiny human who spent a lot of time calling me "Grandma!" There was a lot of "No, this is Susan, she's Jill's sister, wait, did we ever explain what a sister is?" which meant that on the day I left he was REALLY GOOD at the Susan thing!

    • Oh, I've now met the #HeroesOfDellan, Jill's gaming group. It's very helpful to be able to put faces to the names, because I have heard STORIES about their antics.

    • And because I know the content that the internet is here for: have pictures of Jill's disaster dog.

  • It's Worldcon this week! It is IMMENSELY weird doing Worldcon and not Nine Worlds (Nine Worlds isn't on this year), and I am... Slightly panicking. I LEAVE ON THURSDAY AND I HAVEN'T CONSOLIDATED ALL OF MY STUFF INTO ONE PLACE YET! Like, I've got all of my meds, and all of the paperwork that I KNOW I need (turns out that my ADHD meds are a controlled enough substance that I actually need to bring proof from the doctor's that I'm allowed to have it.), but I'm very paranoid that if I don't put them all in one place I'm going to forget something. ... Also my master plan was "wear all the cute dresses!" but I'm not sure the weather is going to be good enough. On the other hand, convention centres full of people are likely to be sweltering. You understand the dilemma.

  • This is the first time that I'm getting a plane on my own, and like I know that this is like the tiniest flight and there's going to be MAYBE two hours before I can meet up with a bunch of people that I know, but also, y'know, anxiety about somehow missing my flight or showing up without my passport or Ryanair taking all of my cabin bags off me because I've misunderstood something. *lies on the floor*

  • I need to work out whether/how to cover fan translations of stuff in my reading column, which is honestly not a problem I ever expected to have because I don't read scanslations! (It's not a moral thing, it's a "Yeah, but I managed to wait ten years for Saiyuki to be license rescued without cracking and reading the scans, so I can wait out anything" thing.) But I've been ambushed with fan translations of chinese BL webnovels and the Bacanno author's Fate/Stay Night fanfic (NO REALLY), and now I need to work out if/how I mention it on Lady Business. ... Lex is going to make another joke about ethics in journalism and I'm gonna have overthrow him, this is the WORST.

  • OKAY BUT SERIOUSLY THE GUY WHO WROTE BACANNO WROTE FATE FANFIC AS AN APRIL FOOL'S JOKE, AND THEN TYPE MOON MESSAGED HIM LIKE "... DO YOU WANT THIS TO BE CANON????" AND THEN HE CREATED THE JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURES OF THE FATE UNIVERSE AND I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW HE'S LIVING THE DREAM THIS HARD BUT I RESPECT IT?

  • SPEAKING of Fate, did I mention that the spin-off where Waver Velvet, My Depressed Son With PTSD, solves crime with magic has been released? Because it has, and I spend a lot of time flopping over Lex and having intense feelings. It has the EXACT amount of Waver being grumpy, competent, and still tangled up in his feelings about the Holy Grail War that I wanted, A+, thank you Type Moon for this delicious meal, I will wait to devour all of the fic until after this series is done.

  • I have no idea how to make the email posts not come out as gibberish, but I am doing science to fiddle with it and see how it works.

  • I am trying to pack everything I need and remind myself that as long as I have my phone, my bank cards, and my passport, EVERYTHING ELSE CAN BE REPLACED IF I FORGET IT. It might not be convenient, but it's an option that I have!
